Lower House Farm Wedding Photographer
Kate and Giles got married at Wild By Nature’s Lower House Farm, in a 17th Century barn with views across the Black Mountains on the Welsh border. We’d chatted before the big day about their plans for a fun, relaxed and colourful wedding, and I was really excited to capture the day as their Lower House Farm wedding photographer.
My documentary approach to award winning wedding photography was what they were really keen on, they wanted to enjoy their day without feeling like they needed to pose. I blended in with their wonderful friends and family to capture the smiles, laughter, and relaxed atmosphere of their Lower House Farm wedding, in the beautiful countryside between Hay-On-Wye and Abergavenny.

I love it when couples make their day unique, doing things the way they want to rather than what might be expected. So, when Kate and Giles told us they were having food before their ceremony, I knew we’d get along well (mmmm fooooood!). It was the combination of the stunning location and the big focus on delicious food that led them to choose to have their wedding at Lower House Farm, and it couldn’t have been more ideal.
The tables had been decorated with flowers in vases by Harriet Wilkins from Birnbeck Designs, and the in-house chefs cooked up a feast in the outdoor wood-fired kitchen for their guests (and me!) to enjoy.
Lower House Farm weddings are really popular with foodies and I can really see why! DELICIOUS! Throughout their meal, everyone was super relaxed, just eating, chatting and enjoying themselves, it was exactly what Kate and Giles had wanted for their day.
Wedding at Lower House Farm
Once they’d finished eating, their ceremony was held in the covered yard with their guests gathered around and a gentle breeze blowing through. Kate had chosen a beautiful 1970s vintage dress from Ashwell & CO, who are famous for their sustainable vintage bridal collections. Young Blooms Florists created Kate’s fab flower crown and matching decorations for the oak-beamed ceremony surround, which added a pop of colour to their Lower House Farm wedding photography.
Another benefit of the covered yard at Lower House Farm is the fact you can also make the countryside views part of your wedding décor, with glorious green fields and little flowers popping up from outside to join you. There were some heartfelt readings, and moments of happy tears throughout Kate and Giles’ ceremony, surrounded and supported by their closest friends and family.
Relaxed Lower House Farm weddings
After their ceremony, and some expertly thrown confetti, we were entertained by the four-piece Melody Room Jazz Band who played some tunes to accompany celebratory drinks, long overdue catch-ups, and games in the field.
The family atmosphere was so welcoming and chilled, with everyone able to enjoy the day and toast to Kate and Giles in the spectacular countryside. We even managed to get a big photo of everyone together with a little bit of gentle/cheeky persuasion, some advanced-level child herding, and as I found out later… a bit of help from the Royal Navy ;)
Kate and Giles had always wanted their day to be relaxed and fun, with a family focus (26 children running around!). They’d also arranged for there to be an on-site creche, provided by Cicciona’s Little Guests, so all the parents could enjoy the day knowing the kids were happy and well looked after.

Their evening entertainment from Speaker Box began to set up and I snuck off with the newlyweds to capture some casual photos of them enjoying the surrounding grounds together, and with their little boy. When they invited me to join them as their Lower House Farm wedding photographer, we chatted about the importance of being able to relax and not feel too pressured to pose or take too much time away from their guests, so I made sure this was super chilled, fun and didn’t take them away from the party for too long.
We went for a very quick wander (and it’s surprising how much space there is to explore!), I photographed them enjoying a few moments together, jumping across the stream, skimming stones, and laughing pretty much constantly – these two are just brilliant together.
Speeches, pizza and dancing!
Next, pizza was served (kids first – got to keep the little ones happy!), while the grownups shared drinks and speeches around the hay bale tables in the covered yard, with some more jazz tunes.
Then it was time for dancing in the main barn, with everyone showing off their moves with pizzas in hand!
One of my favourite photographs from the evening was as the weather closed in, everyone had come inside out of the rain and one solitary figure remained next to the fire outside, under an umbrella determined to finish toasting marshmallows. That’s dedication for you, what a little legend!
I spent a wonderful day with Kate and Giles as their Lower House Farm wedding photographer, I was welcomed by their family and friends, and I loved the relaxed and laid-back vibe of the whole day.
